Every answer is correct so far. 
 
Yep, same reason why you can't fill your engine with oil and dispense with the oil pump, filter, etc.  Filling with 90 W oil would generate a heck of an HP loss due to churning & heating of the oil.  The ideal is to keep a film of oil on the gears, not keep them submerged.
 
Cooling is also vital for long term health of the drive.

I would bet the pressure fed plain bearing is happier with a continuous supply of pressurized oil.
