 That's what I did and it worked just fine.

However, I did discover (fortunately before I cut the hole in the new 
mounting plate) that the flywheel that was used in my old Ross 2.17 drive 
was 1" smaller in diameter than the stock 13B flex plate.  Apparently they 
used a 12A flywheel or someother make in my Ross drive.  I just happened to 
have a 13B flex plate laying around and I happened laid the one from Ross on 
it - it was clearly smaller!!.  Had I used that one as to cut my starter 
hole I doubt it would have worked for the starter.
