I also had coolant issues with my first engine, the one where the coolant passages were rusted solid.  I must have run it 20 times with a couple hours total run time before I finally melted the coolant o-rings.  The other times I turned it off shortly after the coolant started to spew out.  temps never rose because the coolant was not circulating.
 
Those irons were all toast - because of the rust.  Otherwise they were fine.  There is some mild scorching on the rotor housings, but it comes off with some elbow grease.  rotors are also scorched but not blued.
 
I got new irons, had them ported, and am about to put it all back together with the original everything else.
