This
sounds very plausible. Now I wonder what sort of filler material they use?
I was thinking that Devcon (an industrial version of JB Weld) might do a good
job.

The pucks that I've seen that
had recesses had a filler (heat barrier) material that sits slightly proud of
the metal edge. I believe the purpose is to reduce heat from the pads
transfering to the caliper.
