My memory is correct that the fuel pressure stayed up a relatively long time on shutting the pump off before I had the engine out isn't it??

Sorry, I can't help with your memory, unless maybe it's time for your brain scan  :-)
 
What regulator are you using?  The aftermarket adjustable regulator that I have has never seemed to hold pressure after shutdown of the pumps.  Within just a couple minutes, the pressure is gone, and it's been that way since day one, and with several sets of injectors.
