There is quite a bit of alternate engine discussion on the so-cal RV List.  Mostly the "no you can't"s vs. the "Yes I can"s  (me included).  Dan is the local 200hp IO-360 RV-7 champ, while Robert flys a Supercharged 4-cyl Subie powered RV-7.

Because of my current surge problem, and ongoing cooling limitations I can't keep up these guys.  Besides my RV-6 would have a slight disadvantage, we need another RV-7 or an RV-4...  Hint hint Tracy  :-)

Guys, as a moderator on this list, I'm obligated to ask you to keep the back
and forth to a minimum.

For what it's worth...

At some point after Robert gets back from OSH, we plan to do some serious
data collection.  The intention is to fly at several different airspeeds at
each altitude from sea level up to maybe 15,000' and produce a table chock
full of performance comparison data (specifically fuel flow data for each
data point).  Hopefully this will provide an honest to goodness
"spreadsheet" that highlights roughly what to expect out of an RV-7 if you
go with (a) or (b).  Neither Robert nor I are professional test pilots, so
you will have to take everything with a grain of salt, but I think this
upcoming quantification will be enlightening.

The other day when we flew side by side, I didn't even look at my fuel flow,
and I can't speak for Robert there either.  We were just having fun.  And,
to be honest, I have never done a really thorough "analysis" of my own
plane's performance -- to the level of detail that I hope to acquire in this
upcoming test.  The new tables that we'll come up with will hopefully answer
all of your questions.
