Trying to help a friend get his recently purchased 2nd
gen running.  He has a street ported 13b with a weber
copy side draft carb.  The engine starts and runs fine
for about 3 minutes and then it starts
backfiring/popping (a little) and loses power and
quits.  Let it sit for a while and it will start back
up and run ok again for another 3 minutes.  I don?t think it?s the fuel pump cutting out since he
has it hardwired on and it seems to be putting out
plenty of flow.  What else to look for?

Thanks guys!

Joa,

From my own 1 gen experience .... replace your fuel filter and check the lines to and from it for even the slightest indication of kinking (metal line take a rock hit?) ... sometimes these lines "come up to temperature" and kink. Replace non metal lines even if they are "old", but look O.K.

Initial indicated fuel flow is not always the same as a good system under pressure. Sometimes it is only 1/2 the equation. If you have a fuel return line, to check it's one way "check valve function", disconnect it .... and blow through it ... "easy does it" ... to check for proper operation (no flow one way, easy flow the other) ... you might want to check the lines around it also.

Sure sounds fuel related.

Good luck,

Dale Smith
