Bill, Glad to hear your RV-6 looks good AND flys fast now.

Now you know why I hung that muffler under the plane!

I did the straight pipe w/ no muffler vs straight pipe w/ spintech muffler top speed test and had no power difference at all. Got the exact same RPM both times but top speed was down about 3-4 MPH with the muffler due to aerodynamic drag. Actually, this might even indicate a bit more power with the muffler because the higher speed normally allows the engine to speed up a bit. BTW, after 250+ Hrs the spintech is still perfect, no cracks, loose baffles, etc. It's the best birthday present I ever got. Thanks to the Fly Rotary group for funding this experiment : )

Gentlemen:

After 160 hours, I am working on MORE POWER again. I took off the home-made muffler, and had the local muffler shop make me a 2 into 1 straight pipe so I could get an idea what the back pressure was costing me.

First off, it is so loud (just like others have reported) that I could barely hear the radio over my ANR headset! I think an hour at full throttle would make you crazy.

Static rpm increased only by about 50 rpm, but on the top end, it made a large difference. My normal WOT true at 3000 msl is 180 mph. With the straight pipes, it was 206 mph! Look out Tracy!

Muffler is back on, and the intake is the next project. Need to make it more like the ones that work. (Tracy, Ed, etc.) I keep hanging that turbo on there, but it needs about a 2 inch spacer between the manifold and turbo to clear everything. I am not sure I want 35 lbs hanging on the side either.
