Al is right about the average power level in a car being low (I think it is even lower than 30%) but BMW knows very well that any performance car that got a reputation for inadequate performance or cooling on the no speed limit autobaun would ruin their invaluable reputation.   They had to have tested it at high constant power I would guess.

Those interested in the electric water pump have a new friend. BMW has gone

to the electric pump on the new 2006 BMW 330i. This is a 6 cyl, 255 hp, 3

liter engine and I doubt BMW would have made this step without lot of

testing at all temps and hp outputs. The April 2005 issue of "AUTOMOBILE"

has the article on the car - the water pump is just a sidenote - they claim

it saves 2hp and they were very weight conscious on the engine. Looks like

you could mount it anywhere and have a reliable, mass produced, high output

pump. The article mentions it is computer controlled.   Herb Sanders

 

I’d hate to less than positive since obviously this thing is never going to dieJ; but I would deem the above info as irrelavent to our use.  The “average” power level of automotive operation is about 30%, or in this case about 75 hp. And in a car, the output power level is not directly coupled to rpm as it is in a plane with a propeller.

 

Also; check the other of a long list “innovative” items on the Beemer.  The majority are “gee, that’s neat” but have little need for in operation of the car, but can sound good for marketing.  But when you check the price you see that they are there to justify the large expenditure required to be really “in”. (No offense to you BMW owners, I had a 633Csi once myself).
