If RV's have any shortcoming for me, it's that they don't have enough
rudder. How about taller vert stab & rudder tips? Jim Ayers did that on
his RV-3 & was able to put his comm antenna in the VS tip.

You may be right on the diameter observations.  I went from a 68 to a 74, and the difference was HUGE.  Part of that was the fact that I went from having the correct offset, to having the wrong offset.  As I mentioned before, I'm having some doubts as to how effective the mount offset is anyway.

Since Ivan destroyed my rudder, I asked Van's about any option for a larger one.  They said I'd have to change the vertical stab too, and I wasn't willing to do that.  It would certainly be possible to make a longer rudder from front to rear, but it would be a custom piece, though not that hard to do if I really needed it.  The RV-3 is certainly the worst case for rudder authority, and even that it pretty good.  I would have to have a strong left crosswind, coupled with full throttle to run out of right rudder.

Cheers,
Rusty (drooling from the dentist, probably not a good time for a signature photo)
