I have been wondering if I really even need a sump tank. I know that Velocity Aircraft uses one in their aircraft, so I just figured they know a lot more about these canards = than I do. It would, however be nice to totally eliminate a sump tank and just = run the return back to say, the left fuel strake. =20 =20 I tried to outsmart Tracy with my fuel system, but in the end, I decided = to copy the way he does it. He feeds fuel from one tank only, and has a transfer pump to move fuel from the other tank as needed. The beauties = of this system are that there's no selector valve, and you also get to completely drain one tank without worrying about killing the engine. Of course with a sump, you could drain both tanks, then have two whole = gallons of pucker :-) =20 =20 The downside is that you can't change tanks if one is damaged, or contaminated. I figure if one is contaminated, the other probably is = too, and damage is pretty unlikely (even less for you backward plastic plane types ). I believe Tracy uses the left tank, so I will use the = right, just because I have to do something different :-) No really, I can = only imagine damage to the tank if something from the engine compartment = departs. And I can only imagine that being turbo shrapnel, or the exhaust pipe, = and that's all on the left side. =20 =20 BTW, I really do want to see your plane some day. Maybe you can come = see mine when I'm ready to do the cowling work, since I hate fiberglass :-) = =20 Cheers, Rusty (fingers crossed, I'll have a radiator ordered tomorrow) =20 =20 ------=_NextPart_000_0001_01C2F191.E5009DD0 Content-Type: text/html; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Message
Hi, Rusty and = thanks for=20 the response. I have been wondering if I really even need a sump tank. I tried to outsmart = Tracy with my=20 fuel system, but in the end, I decided to copy the way he does = it.  He=20 feeds fuel from one tank only, and has a transfer pump to move fuel from = the=20 other tank as needed.  The beauties of this system are=20 that there's no selector valve, and you also get to completely = drain=20 one tank without worrying about killing the engine.  Of course = with a=20 sump, you could drain both tanks, then have two whole gallons of pucker=20 :-)

The downside is that = you can't=20 change tanks if one is damaged, or contaminated.   I figure if = one is=20 contaminated, the other probably is too, and damage is pretty = unlikely=20 (even less for you backward plastic plane types <g>).  =20 I believe Tracy uses the left tank, so I will use the right, = just=20 because I have to do something different :-)   No really, I = can only=20 imagine damage to the tank if something from the engine compartment=20 departs.  And I can only imagine that being turbo shrapnel, or = the=20 exhaust pipe, and that's all on the left=20 side.

BTW, I really do want = to see your=20 plane some day.  Maybe you can come see mine when I'm ready to = do the=20 cowling work, since I hate fiberglass=20 :-)

Cheers,
