Rusty, Increase the radiator thickness to around 4"(this is why Tracy's airplane works so well) and your cowling clearance problems will go away. This is what Nascar radiators are running for thickness, and believe me, as close as all those cars run there's been some considerable testing on radiator design.  Fred
