My current question, is about oil/water heat exchangers.
Do you think this could work, or am I one wacky idea away from being voted out of the group :-)

Rusty,
I dont know of anyone who has tried using an in-rad exchanger. I found the idea very appealing but rejected it because I doubted it would work after talking to several folks using stans alone oil-water exchangers (unsuccessfully). The in-rad exchangers are physically much smaller than the external exchangers that have been tested that I'm aware of so I have my doubts. Fluidyne wanted $1000 for a rad with an exchanger built in so it sounded like a potentially very expensive mistake.
Neil Kruswyk (?) tried the largest Setrab oil-water exchanger a few years back and was unsuccessful. May have been due to his radiator config or the oil cooler, or??? One of the big issues in my mind is that it seems to me that if there is a cooling problem it would be very difficult to determine if the problem was with the oil cooling or in the coolant part of the equation since the two are so closely linked. Seems to me that it would be much easier to troubleshoot with a conventional config.
There was a guy on Paul's list that was using an exchanger (the same one Neil used) on a 13B powered sand dragster. He reported oil temps stable at 230F and coolant stable at 205F when under load. He was satisfied with those numbers but it didnt sound good to me. And he was using a huge radiator (though I doubt he had any sort of air ducts on the inlet).
Dont let me discourage you from trying it. I'm hoping someone makes it work. It would be a way for me to delete the large air scoop currently installed on the top of my cowl if you could make it work.
I'd vote you out for all the crap you've given me over the past year or two, not over the wacky ideas. :-)
